10/19/2013 Gateway's 50th Year Celebration Gala

A half-century of leadership and education in healthcare is celebrated as Gateway Medical Society presents its 50th anniversary gala, Saturday, October 19 at the Marriott City Center Hotel. The event is drawing members, health care professionals, families of teens participating the acclaimed Journey to Medicine program, and supporters of the mission of Gateway Medical Society’s mission to close the knowledge and education gap around healthcare for citizens of all ages. The event benefits the organization’s scholarship programs, supporting the advancement of minority student in healthcare and medical education and degree programs.

Outstanding leaders will be honored with the Champions for Gateway Medical Society Making a Difference Award, given to individuals who have provided Gateway Medical Society with the confidence and resources to grow. The 2013 honorees are Donamarie N. Wilfong, DNP, RN, Director of Clinical Education The Star Center at Western Pennsylvania Health Systems, and John P. Williams, MD, Peter and Eva Safar Professor & Chair Associate Medical and Scientific Director, International and Commercial Services Division, UPMC. Dr. Williams has been instrumental in arranging for use of the UPMC Wiser Stimulation Center for the Gateway Journey to Medicine program.

Negotiating a Day in the Life: How do we manage? (Women Only)

Workshop will deal with how women can manage their daily lives. Discussion will include suggestions for dealing with overall health, parenting children (early years, teens and adults), aging parents, grand children, mates, jobs yet having time for themselves

Behind Closed Doors: Abuse and How We Fix It. (Women Only)

Workshop will address Abusive situations (physical or mental) that women are dealing with whether it is from their mates, children or others. It will also focus on ways women cope with the situation by self-medicating with drugs and/or alcohol or by abusing others 

HIV/AIDS 101

This workshop is designed to increase your awareness on the difference between HIV and AIDS. Recognize the local, US and abroad impact of HIV/AIDS. Identify How HIV is transmitted and know ways to protect you: Prevention       

We Are our Brothers Keeper (Men Only)

This interactive workshop will make men aware of their potential health challenges and provide strategies for them to improve and manage their health.     

Tips for Healthy Living

This interactive workshop will provide you with the tools you need to make healthier food choices. Ways to get up get out & get active. Strategies to help cope with everyday stress.

Are You Seeing The Best You Can See?

This workshop will give you understanding of Correctable vision problems, medical, surgical and therapeutic treatments for common eye disorders. In addition, we will identify risk factors for common eye diseases.

YOUTH PROGRAM

Bullying Prevention

This workshop will educate students on identification, response and reporting incidences of bullying.

HIV/AIDS 101

This workshop will encourage open dialogue about how HIV/AIDS is spread.  Abstaining from risky behaviors that promote the spread of the virus and learning more about the prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS.

Obesity:  Don’t Take It Lightly

This workshop will help you understand the importance of making healthy food choices and being active. You have the power to choose so make sure your choices are healthy ones

Hip Hop and Health

This workshop will give you an insight on Hip Hop and your health. You will also hear about students who have done great things with music

The Goal of the Symposium

African Americans are at higher risk for certain health issues. However, many of these problems can be prevented. Knowing your risks and learning new habits and behaviors can improve your health. The goal for this symposium is to provide the African-American community with information and resources to help them be healthy.

The Dirty Truth About Smoking

Panelists: Phase III students of Journey to Medicine
This panel discussion will focus on important facts you should be aware of if you smoke or live with someone who smokes legal or illegal substances. Many health problems develop very quickly in the young smoker and it is important for you to know how smoking can affect you now and long-term.
